East meets West blends Chinese aesthetic with contemporary design to bring a pop-up show from 16th-26th November in one of the world’s most creative and lively cultural hubs, Covent Garden. This will be a visual feast of a new and innovative Chinese aesthetic.

Many people in the West maintain the old concept of “made in China” as a symbol of crude and bad quality products. We look forward to this exhibition as an opportunity to break away from such stereotypes, replacing Chinese production with Chinese creation, and calling upon people to discuss and redefine the concept of “made in China”, by showcasing the virtues of contemporary China’s visual aesthetic to the British public. We will build a display and sales platform simultaneously to promote products, bridging the gap between East and West through online content and offline display that presents China’s unique aesthetic and exquisite craft heritage. Through cooperation with mainstream British shopping malls, we will launch and nurture Chinese brands with high potential into the Western market, fulfilling the demand for individual and distinctive products among London’s consumers.

出与新/Out and new
Our products are selected according to the double standards of contemporary Chinese aesthetic as well as international creative design concepts, with items covering a wide range of fields from traditional craft, fashion design to home-life products. The participating brands are mainly from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, including those that have exhibited at internationally renowned exhibitions such as the Milan Triennale, as well as influential and emerging designer brands. These brands are committed to the expression and existence of Chinese cultural traditions and aesthetics in the context of contemporary society, and embody the current situation of creative design in China. In addition, for the first time products such as drinks will appear in London as the result of creative design, enlightening visitors to new concepts of Chinese lifestyle.
创新工艺 (Innovation craftwork)
Once the tallest tower under heaven, Nanjing’s Porcelain Pagoda has been transformed into an elegant tea set that quietly awaits the resounding call of history. Sat on your table as it brews a pot of tea, the tea set named “Echo” has a strong Chinese essence, combining cultural heritage with the practical objects of daily life. Hundredicrafts as a platform for heritage craft and design is an alter on which such dialogues take place. Taking the idiom “food is the God of the people” and fusing it with a caisson ceiling that links to heaven, a marvellous crockery set is made called “Imperial Brocade”. The porcelain set embodies ancient Chinese concepts and the bringing together of heaven and man. Exquisite handicrafts like these blend past and present to create meaningful pieces at home in modern life.
Focusing on the combination of traditional handicraft and contemporary design, FLUX is a cooperation with craftsmen and inspired by the ancient Chinese fan, which creates various colours of light by changing its movement path elegantly. The lamp shade is made of layers of Xuan paper and silk, a renowned material combination for ancient Chinese painting scrolls. With unique properties of great tensile strength, smooth surface and pure texture, the layers keep the direct rays of light and create a soft glowing light and a warm atmosphere.
KANJIAN is a social enterprise promoting contemporary design inspired by wisdom of traditional Chinese crafts. KANJIAN brings together prominent designers in China and abroad to work closely with local craftsmen to realize exemplary products with new possibilities and interpretation derived from traditional Chinese materials and techniques. “Celebrate Quality” is the founding motto of KANJIAN. “KANJIAN Life” is underneath products series of KANJIAN. “KANJIAN Life” combining new designs with traditional craftsmanship, is a collection full of practical design and handmade products, and specially designed and launched for modern life. Following the mission of “Created For People”, “KANJIAN Life” makes contemporary crafts designs available to the public, and established a chic and modern lifestyle with the public.

In 2015, Keyi began making art inspired products designed to capture people’s attention with vibrant colours, artistic patterns and an overall elegant style, later developing into a unique set of products. Advocating that artistic products must be inspired by true works of art, Keyi designs draw on Chinese traditional culture such as the famous classic novel the "Dream of Red Mansions" set in Nanjing during the Qing dynasty. With tradition at the core of its design concept, Keyi creates luxury pieces that chime with the local culture and art of Nanjing.
Man Wuzhi is a collaboration of designers, artists, writers and artisans, committed to researching and creating handmade products that revive elements of traditional folk art. The Man Wuzhi “Brush and Ink” group is composed of cross-disciplinary researchers in Chinese calligraphy who retrace the origins of the traditional writing study, and forge links with outstanding contemporary craftsmen, artists and designers in the field of brush and ink. Multiple perspectives come together to create modern interpretations of objects fit for the study, redefining the concept of the literati today.
太湖窑 (Taihu Ceramics)
Taihu Ceramics is an intangible cultural heritage brand based on the rich cultural traditions of the Yangtze River region. Yiyang Yisheng was created by the young designer Xiang Xiangfei, receiving much attention upon winning the Red Dot Design Award and participating in the Milan Home Show. Master Gao Brewing Co., owner of the Master Gao® beer brand, was established in 2008 in Nanjing. Defined as a mysterious brand, living between positive and negative space, HAZE is an emotional connection between the urban nature of the founder’s home city, and the environment-at-large. HAZE’s brand identity is inspired by architectural elements from blueprints, building material-concrete and copper, to the transformation of geometry. Shapes making up the eyewear are made by the transformation of geometric shape and lines. The blue concrete texture mimics the haziness and sophistication of the heritage of blueprints. Our pattern represents geometric transformation and the process of how we produce new form and shape concepts for our eyewear.

Born in Wuhan, China, Isabella Liu is a leading jewelry designer and artist currently based in London. Incorporating Chinese and western design elements in her work, Isabella established her design studio in 2015 and set up a jewelry consultancy business with the Chairman of the British Silver Festival, Gordon Hamme, in 2016. Her work was featured in ‘The Jeweller’ Magazine from National Association of Jewellers where she was commended for ‘bringing China and Britain together through jewelry design’.
劲酒 (Jing Liqueur)
Inspired by China’s traditional medicine culture, Jinjiu is guided by Chinese medicinal theory and based on the secret recipe of Qing dynasty palace wine, using authentic herbal ingredients such as ginseng, goji, angelica, yam, and astragalus. After extracting the herbal essences of these ingredients they are blended with aged Chinese white spirits to create fragrant and delicious Chinese herbal wines.
The S•DEER brand was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Nanjing, China. S•DEER draws inspiration from nature, classical Eastern and Western culture, contemporary art, into abstract symbols and dress sense. It also innovates the language of fashion with the artist's thinking and critical vision. The brand is good at using painting and sculpture techniques to deal with clothing texture and outline structure, in order to bring a different aesthetic experience from pan-fashion for wearers.
元新蓝 (YUANXIN BLUE)
The technique of blue printed and dyed cloth from Nantong has been classed as a national intangible cultural heritage project, passed down by Wu Yuanxin. Working in the industry for the past 40 years, Wu Yuanxin has established a museum, set up a Ming and Qing dynasty style dying house, published a monograph as well as trained many specialists. Gradually he has formed a collection of old printed and dyed blue cloths, undertaking research and teaching to create a new form of the inherited technology. With the core concept of “Coming from life, Returning to life”, Wu Yuanxin founded the brand “Yuanxinlan”, breathing new life into the traditional blue cloth technology. The brand strives to adhere to contemporary aesthetic taste, making objects, home accessories and crafts relevant to modern life.

Xu Lei is the most popular Chinese painter in the world. His works are not only exhibited in group exhibitions but also solo exhibitions in important art institutions around the world. "Horse" is the most well-known and iconic image of the artist Xu Lei. The image of horse is calm, realistic, beautiful and directed at a certain context. These blue paintings, by depicting surreal scenes on silk, the artist intend to outline the balanced philosophy emphasized in Chinese traditional culture creativity.
喻慧夏园掠影茶具套盒 (Yu Hui's "Summer Garden" Teaset Box)
“Summer Garden” is inspired by Yu Hui’s painting with the same title which has been reinterpreted into a porcelain tea including a modern angular teapot and teacups. On each teacup a blackbird is painted as if lifting it to the sky while a Taihu rock is used to decorate the porcelain tray, incorporating all the elements of Yu Hui’s delicate and poetic painting. Yu Hui is a national artist of the first class as well as the vice president of China Gongbi Painting Society, deputy dean of Jiangsu Provincial Painting Institute, a specially hired professor of Nanjing University’s Art Research Institute, and visiting professor of Nanjing University of the Arts. Blackbirds are a recurring theme in her work, inspired by an experience at the Tuotuo river in western China and depicted in flight in many of her paintings, implying a certain symbolic meaning. Her Taihu stone series contrasts Taihu stones that symbolise literati culture with graceful and dignified blackbirds, displaying a philosophical exploration into the meaning of life.
